How is Cataract Surgery done? |

The
most modern method of surgery is by phacoemulsification
where a 3mm cut is made in the eye and cataract is made
into small pieces by ultrasonic waves & washed.
Following this a foldable Intraocular lens (IOL) is
inserted into the eye through this small cut.

What are the advantages of phacoemulsification
over other methods? |

It
is a small incision, No stitch, No injection (selected
cases), early recovery, day care operation.

Is someone required to accompany me on
the day of operation? Can I drive back home? |

It
is not compulsory that a bystander is required, but
advisable. Patient himself can drive back home after
surgery, but not recommended

I am a diabetic. Can I undergo Cataract
Surgery? |

Yes,
with good control of diabetes and physicians clearance
of other Systemic illnesses like High blood pressure,
Asthma and heart problems, Phacoemulsification can be
safely done.

Can I continue with my previously prescribed
medications, before operation? |
| A |
Yes,
all the prescribed medications with few exceptions (like
blood thinners) should be continued. Anyway, physician's
advice should be sought.

Can I eat before the operation? |
| A |
Yes,
Light breakfast or meals can be taken, as operation
does not need the patient to be to put to sleep.

Do I need to undergo any tests before
the operation? |
| A |
Yes,
detailed examination of the eye, by the eye doctor,
to rule out any other contraindications for operation.
Also, Scanning and Keratometry to calculate the required
power of the IOL, need to be done. Also, any systemic
illness needs to be ruled out by the physician.

What are other precautions I need to
take on the day of surgery? |

Avoid
wearing any makeup on the day of surgery & also
for at least 10 days after surgery. Please stop using
contact lens before operation. 1 week prior - in case
of soft contact lens & 2 weeks prior in case of
hard lens.

Will I be put to sleep before Surgery? |
| A |
No,
Phacoemulsification is usually done under Local / Topical
medications only. Most patients experience gentle pressure
and not pain during operation.

How long does the operation last? |
| A |
It
takes approximately 30-40 minutes for phacoemulsification.

Will I be able to see immediately after
the operation? |
| A |
The
vision may be blurred temporarily following operation
because of the medications that dilate the pupil &
the bright light of the microscope.

Do I need to wear Glasses after surgery? |
| A |
Usually,
No. But, it is required for reading or near work, if
opted for single focus lens. Patients who require precise
distance vision also, do better with both near and distant
vision glass.
